DAYTON -- Hall of Famer Hal McCoy's 41-year career as a Reds beat writer is in the air if he can't find a ride to games.
"Just wondering, am I going to be able to do this? How will I get back and forth?" McCoy said.
McCoy hasn't driven himself to a Reds game since 2002 after strokes in both optic nerves left him legally blind.
His friend and ride to the games for five years can no longer do the job. So Hal is asking his loyal readers if he could hitch a ride with them.
"College students have offered, retired people, male, female. I've had people from all over the country say they would gladly do it if they could be here."
The job's unpaid, except for 55 cents a mile toward gas and would involve long hours.
"For night games I leave my home in Englewood at 1:30 and don't get back until after midnight."
But you also sit right by McCoy in the press box and watch every home game for free. So he needs to see proof you can do the job.
"You have to have a reliable car, good driving record. I'd like to sit down and have lunch with a few of the people," he said.
He recently thought he might have to retire.
Reds nations spoken and he knows again just how much he's meant to fans the last four decades.
"I really appreciate that. It hits home all the time, I forget about it until something like this happens."
