Dayton Man Sentenced to 21-Years-to-Life for 2011 Murder

DAYTON -- Dwayne Lamont Ellison, 35, of Dayton was sentenced Wednesday for the May 9, 2011, shooting death of 21-year-old Isaiah West. Ellison was found guilty Dec. 21 and sentenced to a total of 21-years-to-life in prison on murder and a firearm charge.

According to Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr., Ellison and West had argued outside a liquor store on Germantown Street on May 9, 2011. Ellison left but returned with a semi-automatic handgun and fired multiple times at West. West was armed legally and returned fire. West was killed in the exchange, while Ellison was uninjured.

Ellison was sentenced to 15-years-to-life on the murder charge plus an additional, mandatory and consecutive three years for using a firearm. He was sentenced to three years incarceration, the maximum, on the having weapons while under disability charge, which was also ordered to be served consecutively, for a total of 21-years-to-life.

He has prior convictions of trafficking in marijuana, tampering with evidence and carrying a concealed weapon.

This is another example of a senseless death at the hands of a violent defendant armed with a handgun, Heck said.
