GREENVILLE -- A 21-year-old Greenville man sits behind bars after police say he abused his two-week-old son.
Darke County Deputies arrested Cody Cantrell Friday night, after a grand jury returned an indictment on him, and the infant's mother, Chelsea Hartman.
Cantrell faces felonious assault and child abuse charges. He sits in the Darke County Jail without bond.
Hartman also faces child abuse charges, but has not been arrested.
Those in the Greenville community were shocked to hear the extent of the infant's injuries.
"From what I understand it takes a pretty good whollop to break a baby's bone," said Mike Klintworth, lives near Greenville, "That child did not deserve to be mistreated."
Greenville Police started investigating after the infant was rushed to Dayton Children's Hospital back on November 28 of this year.
The infant had two broken legs, a broken arm, three broken ribs, swelling and bleeding on the brain and bleeding on the spine.
"There had to be a considerable amount of force used on a two-week-old child for it to sustain the injuries that it did," said Detective Eric Roberts, Greenville Police Department.
The incident happened at Hunter's Oak Apartments.
Police say the mother was not involved in the actual abuse, but was home and didn't do anything to stop it.
"She's the parent she's responsible for the welfare of such a young child," said Detective Roberts.
And while the father sits behind bars, Klintworth feels for the families involved.
"I'm sorry for you," he said, "I'm sorry that you have to go through this pain, and really what this young man needs is help."
Hartman received a summons to appear in court. No date has yet been set for her.
As for Cantrell, he's expected in court Wednesday or Thursday morning.
Greenville Police say the infant is doing well, but they don't know if he will have any life-long lasting effects from his injuries.
Right now, his in the care of a foster family.
