DAYTON -- A man who police said was involved in a drug transaction also is accused of assaulting a police officer while being detained Saturday evening.
Dayton Police said Dashawn J. Smedley, 19, was driving a car that was involved in an illegal drug transaction about 5:49 p.m. Saturday at Crocus and Wolverine drives. An officer stopped the car, described as a maroon Buick Regal, on Della Drive.
The officer ordered the driver to the back of his cruiser, where, he said, the Smedley resisted, hit him in the face with "what felt like his closed fist," and ran from the cruiser.
The officer chased him down and ended up Tasering Smedley out of concern for going "hands-on again with him."
Smedley was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstructing official business.
The officer said he sustained a bump on the head.
