Huber Heights Schools Propose $6 Million in Cuts

HUBER HEIGHTS -- Huber Heights Superintendent Susan Gunnell has held the title for less than a year, but faces enormous challenges because of a shrinking budget.

"Right now we are deficit spending, and we are not allowed to be in deficit spending based on Ohio revised Code," she said.

The district last passed a tax levy for operating costs in 2005. All recent attempts have failed.

"We keep offering breaks to businesses so they'll move in, but yet we don't offer any breaks to homeowners and what are they going to do? It's just terrible this country doesn't value education, that's what appalls me," said Morene Brustkern of Huber Heights.

The end result is a slew of cuts, from programs to staffing, saving the district $8 million.

But after the November 6 levy failed, the district has placed even deeper cuts on the table, that total about $6 million in savings.

"This includes all high school extra curricular activities and athletics," said Gunnell.

Up to 47 teachers, four bus drivers, some administrative staff, all field trips and extra curricular activities ... from art, music, band, ROTC, even varsity sports could be gone next year.

"It's really impacting our kids and it's a real shame, I hate to hear about it," said Leigha Herrmann of Huber Heights.

In 2008, residents in Huber Heights voted for a bond issue to pay for seven new schools, including the Wayne High School, slated to open after Christmas Break.

That money could only be used for the buildings.

If the current proposed reductions pass the school board, the district will operate at the state required minimum standards beginning the 2013-2014 school year.

"The young people, they need to have the same opportunities that my generation had, it's just not fair to cut what they need," said Karen Rice of Huber Heights.

The School Board also have plans to discuss a new levy for May 2013. If that levy passes, it would be implemented in January 2014.
