Strong Winds May Knock Out Power

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- Better secure those outdoor lights and lawn furniture.  50 mph winds could be scattering them beginning Thursday afternoon.  DP & L is expecting gusts to knock trees into power lines, causing mass outages.  DP & L says during that time it's going to be all hands on deck.

â€œThe dead, dying, and diseased trees will give up under winds of that magnitude and we'll get crews there as quick as we can,” said Brucce Coppock with DP & L.

But if outages are widespread, it could take crews some time to get power fully restored.  In past wind storms, families across the Miami Valley were without power for days.  Some were in the dark for more than a week.

“The concern is when the wind comes, we lose power in our neighborhood.  Almost everyone in the neighborhood has generators and we're worried about that this close to Christmas,” said Jim Gruber of Beavercreek.

Generators were also a hot commodity at Home Depot.  Judy Abner and her friend were checking them out Wednesday.

“It's annoying to not have electricity and it gets cold, so we want to be prepared,” she said.

While a generator can be considered more of a luxury, DP & L says the necessities for your home should include a weather radio, a first aid kit and flashlights with working batteries.  Bottled water is also a good idea.

“Batteries are probably one of the big items.  They may have a flashlight, but they may not have batteries in the house to put in the flashlight,” said Justin Santoianni with Home Depot.

If you see power lines down, DP & L says give them a call at 877-4OUTAGE.
