COLUMBUS -- Animal activists gathered at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus pushing for a new national law that would essentially stop the breeding and sale of wild, exotic animals.
The "Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act" was introduced following the exotic animal escape in Zanesville, where 50 animals were killed after their owner released them.
Supporters say the bill would be more important for the animals' and the public's safety.
According to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 big cats are kept as pets and for profit in homes and roadside zoos across the country.
