Blue Angels Shows Canceled Through 2013 Season

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Blue Angels are officially grounded for the 2013 season.

WEAR-TV in Pensacola, Fla., reports that the U.S. Navy announced the cancellations Tuesday morning as a response to budget cuts from the sequestration. The Navy did say that outreach events, like air shows, may be supported by local means without any cost to the government.

The Navy's announcement follows a similar plan by the U.S. Air Force in late March to cancel all of the Thunderbirds appearances, which means that the Dayton Air Show will be without the popular jet demonstration team this year.

As far as the government is concerned, WEAR-TV reports, there won't be any government-funded airshows or public practices through the end of the fiscal year, which ends in September. The Blue Angels will still have private practices to keep up their flight training. The Blue Angels are stationed at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

The Navy says demonstrations are intended to continue after the 2013 season and will continue to be used as a recruiting tool for the Navy and Marine Corps.
