KETTERING -- The Kettering Police Department is hosting the A.L.i.C.E Training Instructor Certification Program. The purpose of this program is to certify local, and school-based law enforcement, as well as church, hospital, and workplace administrators and safety professionals as instructors.
"When you walk into your workplace, what are you going to use if you need to use a weapon?," asked Officer Ron Roberts, "Are you going to improvise and use a fire extinguisher? A stapler? Any type of weapon that you would normally not use everyday."
During the 16 hour training course, teachers, doctors, pastors, and others will learn what to do when confronted by a shooter. Once they're certified, they'll be able to teach their co-workers.
The A.L.i.C.E. acronym means Alert, Lockdown, inform, Counter, and Evacuate. This training program is designed to supplement current "Lockdown" or "Secure-in-Place" procedures used frequently in our public institutions. Tragic events have dictated the need of enhanced options provided to building occupants to increase their chances of surviving an active shooter.
There's a mock-scenario training session Friday in Moraine.
