CHILLICOTHE -- A convicted murderer who the state has scheduled to be put to death has received a life-saving operation - on the taxpayer's dime.
Nawaz Ahmed, 58, was convicted of the 1999 killing his estranged wife, her father, sister and niece. his divorce had been scheduled to be finalized within a couple of weeks.
He has exhausted his appeals and only a reprieve by the governor's office stands in the way of his execution. Before then, however, the state is required to provide for his medical care, which included recent open-heart bypass surgery at OSU's Ross Heart Hospital.
The state, citing privacy laws, says it can't divulge the cost of the surgery - or anything about Ahmed's health - but the surgery is estimated to cost much more than $100,000.
