DAYTON -- Three preK-8 schools in the Dayton Public School district - Cleveland, Kemp and Valerie - will open next year as preK-6 schools.
Dayton Public Schools officials made the announcement this week.
The changes at Cleveland and Kemp will give more students access to high-quality, full-day kindergarten and early literacy programs, adding a kindergarten and first-grade classroom in both schools to meet the demand in those neighborhoods.
The changes also will give seventh- and eighth-grade students from all three schools greater access to secondary curricula, helping them build a stronger foundation for college and careers.
Students from all three schools may enroll in Belmont High School or Meadowdale High School or choose to audition to attend Stivers School for the Arts, which also serves grades seven through 12.
Officials also announced that Belle Haven, Edison, Meadowdale and Rosa Parks preK-8 schools will open next year with new academic programs centered on literacy, âplace basedâ learning, pre-IB and STEM, respectively. Place-based learning integrates lessons drawn from the history, geography, ecology and other aspects of the surrounding community. The instructional programs are designed to raise student achievement in the schools where they are implemented.
