New Law for CCW Permits Has Some Concerned

DAYTON -- Changes are coming to Ohio's concealed carry law.

There are numerous changes to the law, but some might think the biggest change is the amount of hours for training.

Right now, you must complete 12 hours total. Ten of those hours are in-class training and two hours are at a shooting range with an instructor.

But starting in March, it changes.

State lawmakers approved a new law which allows people to take six hours of online training and two hours in the shooting range with an instructor.

"I think a lot of it has to be hands on," Vince Renda, Owner, Family Tactical Training.

Renda has been training people to get their CCW permit for the past 20 years.

"To have a trained professional show you how to do it properly, peace of mind," said Joe Hobbins.

"You can't do that by watching a video or understanding, or proper hand placement or proper stance," said Renda.

Learning how to properly grip a gun might seem like a simple concept, but it could mean life or death.

"You could accidentally shoot yourself or you could not know how to use it when you need it," said Hobbins.

Renda is a huge supporter of your second amendment right to bear arms, but believes you have to be properly trained, which is why he's not changing his policy.

"Even though the law has changed we're not going to change our format, we're going to remain exactly the same," said Renda.

Also coming out of this new law, all Ohio counties will have more resources to do extended background checks.
