DAYTON -- Dayton is one of five communities selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to receive assistance in the development of a Green Streets strategy, an initiative designed to help boost sustainability practices in the planning and development of streets and public spaces.

EPA will conduct a two-day technical assistance workshop in Dayton on April 24 and 25, 2013, to assist the City of Dayton with identifying opportunities, challenges and barriers in strengthening its sustainability efforts.

The workshop will examine the City € s existing policies and practices and will include a two-hour walking tour of downtown streets and public spaces and a public meeting. Those details have yet to be announced.

Dayton was awarded this assistance through a competitive process involving communities across the country. The development of a Green Streets strategy is one of several programs comprising the federal agency € s Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities, which supports sustainability and public health in community planning and economic development.

The EPA program complements the City of Dayton € s Livable Streets Policy, adopted by the City Commission in 2010, as well as the City € s broad goal of incorporating sustainability into its operations. In addition to Dayton, the selected Green Streets Strategies communities for 2012 are: Bellevue, Neb.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Lynchburg, Va.; and Maui, Hawaii.
