DAYTON-- The Humane Society of Greater Dayton is receiving numerous calls and complaints about pets being left out in the cold.
ABC 22/ FOX 45 reporter Chelby Kosto and Photographer Doug Lambert rode along with Humane Society Officer Sheila Marquis, while she investigated some of the neglect calls.
"This is just not acceptable." Officer Marquis said about a dog tied up on Soldier's Home- West Carrollton Road.
"Buster" was found shivering and shaking because he's left outside in the cold 24 hours a day, and his water bowl is frozen.
"Pets need proper shelter, and fresh food and water. They make heated water bowls now." She said.
Officer Marquis is checking on Buster after neighbors called and complained. One of those neighbors is Gary Wood. Wood said Buster's homeowner leaves for long periods of time, and doesn't take care of his dog. Wood put a sweater on Buster and has been trying to help.
"We just couldn't stand seeing him outside, with nobody taking care of him. We had to do something about it."
Officer Marquis said if she sees a problem, the pet's owner will get a warning. But after that, if there is still neglect, they could be cited and ordered into court for animal cruelty.
In Buster's case, if they cant find his owner soon, they will take him to the shelter.
"At least, until the owner can come back and take care of him."
If you see an animal in trouble you call the humane society and they will check on it. You can remain anonymous .
