DAYTON -- Heating companies will be working well into the morning hours fixing furnaces and heating systems because of the single digits.
Chris Bryant, service technician with McAfee Heating Systems, says it appears not having clean furnaces is what's keeping him so busy.
Bryant says he will be responding to service calls until at least three in the morning.
We went along with Bryant to one of his repairs.
The woman who lived in the home, Wendy Newbery, says she came home to her thermostat at 51 degrees.
Bryant discovered that Newbery's furnace was broken not because she hasn't been maintaining it, but because she's been lighting candles.
"Once the filter is plugged up with soot, there's no air flow and can only over heat so many times before it fails," said Bryant.
Newbery says she was shocked when she heard that her heater broke because of her candles, "I had no idea that soot could reach down in the basement like that."
The most important thing for everyone during this cold spell is to make sure your furnace filters are clean.
And, if you are someone who likes to light candles, Bryant suggests you use hot lamps.
