NEW LEBANON -- A Dixie Elementary School student was taken to a detention facility Friday for evaluation after New Lebanon Police say he made violent threats in school.
Police say the 7 year old made the comments to a group of students in class, someone told a teacher who notified school officials who then told police.
The threat frightened students.
"Something about shooting other students or having somebody come in and shoot students as well," said Sgt. David Adkins, New Lebanon Police.
The student was taken to Montgomery Co Juvenile Intervention Center be evaluated.
"With the age they just decided they wanted to evaluate the child make sure he's okay and then make the decision whether or not they release him back to his parents and deal with it from there," said Sgt. Adkins.
Adkins said the recent school shootings in Newtown and California didn't influence police response to this incident because he said officers would have handled it the way they did regardless.
It was unclear if the student was still in custody at the juvenile center Friday night.
The comments have shocked this New Lebanon community.
"You think about it I mean where are the parents I mean it seems like we lost our sense of community now and days," said Travis Donson, New Lebanon
Police want this incident to serve as a reminder to parents to always talk to your kids but they don't want parents to be concerned because authorities followed proper protocol.
"We are dealing with comment of a 7 year old I think everybody is just acting on the side of caution to make sure the kids are safe," said Sgt. Adkins.
The incident is now in the hands of the Montgomery Prosecutors Office-Juvenile Division.
