ENON -- The Treasurer of Enon, accused of helping herself to village funds made her first appearance in a Clark County courtroom Friday.
âIt's hard to trust people anymore I mean, you don't know who to trust really" said Sarah Jones, Enon resident.
Sarah Jones, like many Enon residents are buzzing about the arrest of Debra Maurer.
Maurer is accused of stealing $39,450.74 cents of village funds, and depositing that money into her personal bank account. The alleged crime went on for ten years, 2002 to 2012. The Clark County Sheriffâs Office is working with the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) agents on the case.
"As they started digging they found that there were alot of discrepancies from what I understand" said Chief Deputy, Carl Loney, Clark County Sheriffâs Office.
The Sheriffâs office say, as a cover-up, Maurer allegedly altered documents to prevent anyone from finding out she was stealing Enon Village money.
Our news team reached out to Village of Enon officials for a response to Maurerâs arrest, and they said they have âno commentâ.
The Sheriffâs office says one way to protect you from possible embezzlement of funds, hire an outside party to handle the money.
In the end, most residents are just glad the woman allegedly stealing their tax-payer dollars is caught.
âHow crazy can you get, I mean really?! Do they think they can get away with it, they can't, they're eventually going to be caughtâ said Jones.
