SPRINGBORO -- The Springboro School Board is hosting an open discussion with the Springboro community about whether they should allow their staff members with concealed carry permits to carry weapons on school grounds.
The discussion will be held during the school board meeting Thursday night.
Joel Maberry is a senior at Springboro High School. He says the horrific school shooting in Connecticut that left 26 people dead including 20 children, is good enough reason to allow his teachers to carry firearms.
"As a student I would definitely feel much safer with teachers who are trained and educated on firearms that will make me feel like I'm a safe environment if my school was ever to be attacked," said Maberry.
Springboro Board Member, Jim Rigana says the reason for the discussion is to make sure the district has a proper solution in place in the case of a school shooting.
However, there are some who believe teachers carrying firearms will threaten the students.
"The chance of a child getting there hands on a firearm, there's concern about that, so there's a lot of issues regarding this," said Debby Root, a retired principal who lives in Centerville. "What happened in Connecticut, that person broke a window and got in so we have to look at how are we keeping our kids safe in the schools and I don't think turning to guns is always the first way to look at it."
The number one concern for the board is students and staff safety.
"You know anything can happen no matter where it is and we definitely need to take some measures to protect our students and our teachers," said Maberry.
The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at Springboro High School. Anyone is welcome.
