Women Learn To Protect Themselves By Getting RAD

Kettering -- Women are learning not to be the victims of assault with the helping hand - and sometimes feet - of the Kettering Police Department.

Members of the department are holding a Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD) instructional course on four consecutive Tuesdays this month. RAD is a women's self-defense training course and teaches the fundamental, basic form of self-defense, if that person should ever be attacked.

However, instructors say they don't teach participants martial arts.

"Tonight's classroom portion is mostly being aware of what's going on. What your rights are as a person out in public and your right to defend yourself and the right to say 'no.' A lot of people really haven't heard that and need to hear that."

After an evening of classroom instruction, the group will spend the next two weeks learning and honing their physical skills.
