DAYTON -- While kids may enjoy the snow and cold air that comes with it, for parents it can be a different story. Children are susceptible to getting sick easier from the cold says Lisa Schwing at Dayton Childrenâs Hospital.
âYou can get in trouble pretty quick if youâre cold, the only thing worse than cold is cold and wetâ said Lisa Schwing, R.N., Dayton Childrenâs Hospital.
One of the biggest problems kids can face is frostbite, especially if they are dealing with snow.
Areas prone to frostbite are usually the hands, toes, face and ears.
âNumbness, tingling, pain that continues on after theyâve been inside and warmâ said Schwing.
For Melissa Griever, she has her routine down for cold days with her two girls, as they prepare for school.
âWhen itâs cold, really cold like this, I usually take the kids down to the end of the driveway to wait in the car where itâs warm for the busâ said Melissa Griever, Dayton.
âIt doesnât take long for kids to get cold. They have a lot of surface area, and not a lot of core space so theyâre temperature can drop pretty quicklyâ said Schwing.
Perhaps the worst kept secret to combating the cold, no matter the age, is simply dress in layers while outside.
