Keeping Kids Warm in Winter Weather

DAYTON -- While kids may enjoy the snow and cold air that comes with it, for parents it can be a different story.  Children are susceptible to getting sick easier from the cold says Lisa Schwing at Dayton Children’s Hospital.

“You can get in trouble pretty quick if you’re cold, the only thing worse than cold is cold and wet” said Lisa Schwing, R.N., Dayton Children’s Hospital.

One of the biggest problems kids can face is frostbite, especially if they are dealing with snow.
Areas prone to frostbite are usually the hands, toes, face and ears.

“Numbness, tingling, pain that continues on after they’ve been inside and warm” said Schwing.

For Melissa Griever, she has her routine down for cold days with her two girls, as they prepare for school.

“When it’s cold, really cold like this, I usually take the kids down to the end of the driveway to wait in the car where it’s warm for the bus” said Melissa Griever, Dayton.

“It doesn’t take long for kids to get cold.  They have a lot of surface area, and not a lot of core space so they’re temperature can drop pretty quickly” said Schwing.

Perhaps the worst kept secret to combating the cold, no matter the age, is simply dress in layers while outside.
