Local Elementary School Students Collect Thousands of Canned Goods

DAYTON -- A healthy and very productive competition took place in a Dayton elementary school over the past month.  Students from six home rooms  at Ruskin Elementary have been collecting canned goods.

Their initial plan was to build a city out of cans, but instead the kids decided to pay tribute to the 26 children and adults who were killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

"We're showing our respect to them and how we feel,'' Daion Coleman, a Ruskin 7th grader told us, ''how we feel bad about how many parents, how many people, friends and family, lost their young ones and older ones."

In all, students at Ruskin collected 2,683 cans of food, all of which will be donated to the New Hope Food Bank, which is a partner of New Hope Church in East Dayton.
