COLUMBUS -- Governor John Kasich says he will sign a new law allowing guns in the Statehouse parking garage.
There were calls for Kasich to veto the bill after Friday's deadly school shooting in Connecticut. But Kasich told reporters in Columbus on Tuesday that the measure passed the Legislature by a wide margin, and he says the law and the Connecticut shooting are unrelated.
The governor continued by saying he thinks society should tackle issues such as school safety, mental illness and violence in movies and on television before considering new gun laws.
Meanwhile, a Democratic leader in the Ohio House announced Tuesday that she would push a law to close gun show loopholes and improve prisoners' access to treatment for mental illness while they're in the Department of Corrections.
