DAYTON -- The Dayton Playhouse will open its 54th season with the popular musical "Hairspray."
The music is by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and book by Mark OâDonnell and Thomas Meeham. The Dayton Playhouse production will be directed by Tina McPhearson. Musical director is Judy Mansky and Annette Looper will be choreographer for the show.
Auditions will be held at the Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave, Dayton, at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16. Those auditioning will be asked to prepare 32 bars of music (an accompanist will be provided) and to learn a dance combination, so dress comfortably.
Please bring a complete list of any scheduling conflicts between audition dates and Sept. 22. Performance dates for Hairspray are Sept. 6-22. Callbacks may take place on the 17th TBA.
"Hairspray" is a high-spirited musical that takes place in 1962 in Baltimore, Md. Teenager Tracy Turnblad dreams of dancing on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. The show deals with injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s. It opened on Broadway in 2002 and won eight Tony Awards out of thirteen nominations and has toured internationally.
Character Descriptions:
Amber Von Tussle -- Linkâs girlfriend and Tracyâs nemesis. Pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Canât dance but is expected to win Miss Baltimore Hairspray. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. (Female 15 - 20 yrs. old)
Corny Collins -- The charismatic host of the Corny Collins Show. Good looking and smooth talking. Generally nice guy both on and off camera. (Male 25 - 35 yrs. old)
Edna Turnblad -- Tracyâs big and blond mother. A working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Played by a male in drag. (Male 30 - 50 yrs. old)
Link Larkin -- The star heartthrob on Corny Collins Show. Extremely attractive and talented. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. (Male 15 - 20 yrs. old)
Motormouth Maybelle -- Seaweed and Little Inezâs mother. She also appears as the Guest DJ on the Corny Collinsâ Negro Day Show. Big, blonde, beautiful, and proud of it. Sassy and confident. (Female 40 - 50 yrs. old)
Penny Pingleton -- Tracyâs best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her motherâs dominating control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. (Female 15 - 20 yrs. old)
Prudy Pingleton -- Pennyâs strict mother. Very conservative, controlling, and close-minded. (Female 40-50 yrs. old)
Seaweed J. Stubbs -- Tracyâs classmate and friend, who is discriminated against because of his color. Cocky but surprisingly lovable. Talented singer and dancer. He falls for Penny. (Male 15 - 20 yrs. old)
Tracy Turnblad -- Large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A romantic with a good heart and desire to cut up the dance floor. Always on top of the latest trends. (Female 15 - 20 yrs. old)
Velma Von Tussle -- Amberâs mother and the director of the Corny Collins Show. A devious Taskmaster and snobby racist. The former Miss Baltimore Crabs will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. (Female 45 - 55 yrs. old)
Wilbur Turnblad -- Tracyâs simpleminded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He loves his wife, Edna, very much. (Male 55 - 65 yrs. old)
Ensemble -- Corny Collinsâ Kids (Tammy, Brad, Brenda, Sketch, Shelley, etc.); students, hookers; protesters.
