DAYTON -- A memorial along Valley Street remembering Anthony Dukes and all people who lost their lives to crimes this year.
"We know first hand the pain of losing a child" said Lynette Cruz, mother of hit & run victim.
This time of year has been tough for Lynette Cruz and her family. Last year, her son Anthony Dukes, 23, over and killed by a man driving on Valley Street. It's heartbreaking for Lynette to think, 12 months later, her son's killer hasn't been caught.
"As you can see how far away we are from the street, we are far far away and this man just literally ran off the road" said Cruz.
Anthony was Lynette's only child. He also left behind a one year old daughter, who now has to grow up without a dad. The news of the 26 victims, in Friday's elementary school shooting in Connecticut, 20 of them children, just added to the pain.
"27 times over my heart was hurting yesterday, just unimaginable what people in this world are doing, innocent baby children" said Cruz.
To remember her her beloved son, and all those lost in the school shooting, Lynette, surrounded by family and friends released dozens of balloons.
Red balloons represents happiness, yellow and black are for Anthony's favorite football team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. White balloons are for the victims who lost their lives in Connecticut.
"Not unless you've lost a child, you will never really know how bad it hurts" said Cruz.
Attached to each of those balloons, were leaflets like these remembering both Anthony Dukes and the victims of the school shooting yesterday.
