KETTERING -- The nation's in mourning after a shooter opens fire inside a Connecticut elementary school. Friday night, vigils were going on all over the country, including right here in the Miami Valley.
Dozens of people came to the Marshall Road Church of God for a Christmas concert Friday. But in wake of the school massacre Friday morning, they decided to hold a candle light vigil first to remember the innocent victims who were murdered
âA lot of my folks called me today and said, âPastor, why is this happening?â And it's just one of those questions you really canât answer,â said Pastor Rick Smith with Cornerstone Church of God.
âIt was horrifying. I was in the car and all I wanted to do was get to a church and spend some time in prayer,â said Tina Rogal, who attended the vigil.
Everyone at the vigil quietly listened to the lyrics of âAmazing Graceâ with tears in their eyes, mourning the loss of 28 people, including the gunman, shot to death in a school shooting. 20 of those killed were children.
âWhen you just think about the horror of a kindergarten classroom, it's just unimaginable. It can touch everyone to the core. That's why everyone is just so sad. It's awful,â said Rogal.
There was a candle lit for each victim at the vigil, plus prayers for the families who lost the ones they loved most. Itâs a tragedy that has brought the nation together in shock. Everyone in disbelief that so many lives were needlessly taken.
âNumber one it's kids. I'm a parent myself, but I don't think there's a parent in the world that wasn't affected by what was going on there today,â said Pastor Smith.
There will be another prayer vigil at the Summit Christian Church in Trotwood this Sunday at 3pm. The church is located at the corner of Turner and Denlinger Road.
