DAYTON -- A 10-year-old girl was removed from a filthy home on Sandhurst Drive, after police found the child living in deplorable conditions.

Dozens of animals were also taken from the home and are now at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.

Director Mark Kumpf said 16 dogs were rescued, along with two Siamese cats, three hamsters, two chinchillas and two parrots.

"There was not a clean surface in the house. The animals had free reign, over the entire property. It was clear they visited every space and left their mark," Kumpf said.

The little girl living in the home was removed by Child Protective Services.

According to police, the girl did not have a bed and shared a room with  several animals.

According to Kumpf, the floors were covered in urine and feces.
"We were slipping and sliding on the floor, trying to remove the animals," he said.

A woman who lives across the street is upset the child had to live in filth.

"The smell was so bad. You could smell it from the street. It saddens me that she had to live like that," she said.

The man who lives in the home has custody of the 10 year old and may be facing child endangering charges.

The owner is asking for his chinchillas, birds and two of his puppies  back.

A judge will decide later if he gets to keep some of his animals.
The 20 other dogs, cats and hamsters are all up for adoption at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
