VANDALIA -- A wingwoman and her pilot were killed after crashing their plane at the Vectren Dayton Air Show. The crash happened at 12:46 this afternoon. It was the first time the wing walker performed at the Dayton Air Show. It appears she and her pilot were near the end of their routine when the crash happened.
The big ball of fire that shocked on lookers as they watched wing walker Jane Wicker and her pilot Charlie Schwenker perform stunts at the Dayton Air Show.
"I sort of realized at the last second there was a problem and then it was too late," said Andy Stanley, a pilot. Stanley had a front row seat to the crash.
"With the uneven weight distribution on the wing," said Stanley, "It only took a slight miscalculation or slight shift in the weight at that low to the ground in order to cause them to hit the ground."
"We had units on the ground pretty quick," said Lt. Mark Nichols with the Ohio Highway Patrol ,"With the fire department responded as you would expect pretty quickly to the scene. It's my understanding there was nothing they could do for the victims of the crash once they arrived there."
The Highway patrol is investigating to find out what went wrong.
In 2007 there was a fatal accident at the Dayton Air Show. One stunt pilot was killed. Today, the thoughts are on this crash and the victims
"This is a tragedy for what's a very small community," said Terry Slaybaugh, Dayton Airport Director, "Obviously our thoughts and prayers go out to those two individuals and their families.
