UPDATE: DAYTON -- Police are trying to figure out who shot and killed a young mother who was 9 months pregnant.
Police said Da'Lyne Foster, 27, was an innocent bystander who caught a bullet to the chest and died. Her newborn baby is listed in critical condition.
Sadness blankets the Desoto Bass neighborhood after a young mother, 9 months pregnant was shot and killed.
"Everybody out here knew her. She was a loving parent, she took care of her kids." Jennifer Thomas, Da'Lyne's cousin said.
Thomas said Foster was ready to deliver her 4th child. She said Foster was outside Wednesday night, walking around, trying to get the labor process going when a fight broke out between two groups of people.
A man started shooting at a car and Foster got struck with a bullet.
Police said she was shot once in the chest and died at the hospital.
"She was a spectator, watching the fight. She ran across the street, she had nothing to do with the fighting going on." Dayton Police Sgt. Rick Blommel said.
Foster's baby boy was delivered by emergency c-section and is listed in critical condition in the NICU at Miami Valley Hospital.
A memorial is growing at Desoto Bass for Foster who is described as loving mother to her 3 other kids.
"She was a good person. She cared about people. Anything you need, she gave it to you." Delores Nicholson said. Nicholson is the baby's paternal grandmother.
Police questioned a man and recovered the gun. Sgt. Blommel said they believe they know who the shooter is, but are waiting on ballistics tests to come back before they can make an arrest.
Her family said they want justice for Da'Lyne who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"She just wanted the best for her and her kids. I just can't believe she's gone. She is actually gone." Thomas added.
A candlelight vigil is set for Foster Thursday night in the Desoto Bass neighborhood at 9pm.
