Busy Stretch of Road Causes Two Tragedies in Five Years

MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- Two tragic accidents in just five years.

One took a 76-year-old man's life just Wednesday night, and the other took a 16-year-old's life in 2007.

Both were hit and killed by cars.

The stretch of Springboro Pike near Alex Bell Road doesn't have sidewalks, so pedestrians are left to walk along the road.

The mother of 16-year-old Jacob Napier says it's two, too many.

"When I pass over I'm gonna see him again," said LaDonna Napier.

She sits with her Bible in hand as she talks about her son, Jacob.

"He was a rotten kid, he was rotten, he had ADHD," she said, "I think for the first six years of his life he never walked on the carpet he walked on the furniture."

But her life stopped on November 21, 2007. Jacob was riding his bike along Springboro Pike with a friend.

When he tried to cross the street, he was hit and killed by a car.

"A lot of people are on foot or on the bus and I'd just like to see some safety come there," she said.

We watched the area for several hours and saw two people jay-walking and other walking along the busy road.

And while Miami Township Police were on the scene of the latest tragedy Wednesday night, they agreed that stretch of road can be dangerous to pedestrians.

"This time of night traffic speeds are 45 to 55 mph and traffic can't see a pedestrian until it's too late," said Sgt. Matt Nicely, Miami Township Police Department.

It's because of that that ODOT is looking to make changes.

In 2014, they plan to resurface the road, add sidewalks where there aren't any and ramps for people with physical disabilities.

For LaDonna, she finds strength in her faith and that something is being done that could save someone else's life.

"I believe in here after and I believe that we can find comfort in that and I've just really have asked people to pray for him," she said.
