UPDATE: Two Accused in Centerville Extortion Case Plead Not-Guilty

CENTERVILLE -- The two people who are allegedly involved in a strange extortion case appeared in court today.

Byron Mansley II and Callie Yip were arraigned in Montgomery County Court this morning.

Mansley entered a not-guilty plea. He is facing assault, kidnapping and extortion charges.

Yip didn't speak in court and the court entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf.  She is accused of complicity to commit extortion.

Police say a man was allegedly beaten and held against his will as part of an odd contract to pay off a debt.

Earlier coverage:

CENTERVILLE -- A second person has been arrested in a bizarre case in Centerville, where a man was allegedly beaten and held against his will.

"It's hard to believe because they honestly don't seem like bad people," said a neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.

Police arrested 28-year-old Callie Yip for allegedly creating a contract between Bryon Mansley and another man.

They say Mansley dished out harsh punishments to the victim in exchange for paying off some sort of debt.

"He had bones in different stages of healing so we could tell they happened at different intervals. Same thing with cuts, bruises," Centerville Police Officer John Davis said.

Police say Yip was in charge of keeping track of the discipline handed out to the victim.

And the man would be tossed from home to home, living in Yip's Kettering apartment, or living in a Centerville neighborhood with Mansley.

"You couldn't even dream it up," said Officer Davis. "It's almost hard to believe if you didn't realize that it was actually happening."

Neighbors we spoke to didn't want to show their face or give their name for fear of retaliation, but one neighbor knew something was up.

"He's been like black eyes, and slings and stuff like that," said the neighbor. "When he walked in and walked out he'd be looking at the ground."

"He felt like he was in a no-win situation and he felt like he had no way out," said Officer Davis.

But now that the suspects are facing charges and behind bars, police say the victim is finally at ease.

"He seems somewhat relieved, so I think a lot of his fears have been put to rest with the arrest and the fact that somebody's listening to him," said Officer Davis.

Yip has been charged with complicity to extortion, a third-degree felony.
