KETTERING -- A teenager jumps into the pool to cool off Wednesday afternoon, but she never resurfaced. Kettering police say a 17-year-old girl drowned in a pool at the Heritage Knoll Apartments around 3pm.
The pool was packed on the hot, humid afternoon. Residents were hanging out poolside, when suddenly, tragedy cast a somber shadow on their summer fun. A lifeless body was spotted at the bottom of the pool.
"We watch everyone's kids when I'm down there. I keep an eye on everyone because of that," said resident Lindsay Juskae.
Police say a couple people pulled the 17 year old girl's body to dry land, called 911, and immediately started CPR. When medics rushed her to the hospital, she wasn't breathing on her own.
"It's scary, two weeks ago my mom had to jump in and save two grown women that were drowning," said resident, Caitlin Juskae.
But in this case, the rescue was too late. Authorities believe the teen had been underwater for several minutes before anyone noticed her.
"If someone doesn't swim very well, keep an eye on them. If they're in a deeper area and can't touch the bottom, make sure they're watched closely," said Kettering Police Officer Ron Roberts.
"I'm going to keep a closer eye on my kids and everyone else's kids when I go swimming here, if I go swimming here," Lindsay said.
Police say they're still investigating if the teen could swim or whether she had a medical condition.
