DAYTON -- We're fighting back to keep families safe. Summit Square Apartments in Dayton has been the scene of numerous shootings, and even homicides, in recent months. Residents are fed up. They're shelling out cash to hire two off-duty Dayton police officers to patrol the complex during peak times when crimes occur.
Wednesday night the Dayton City Commission approved the contract.
"It's not uncommon for us to provide security for events, or in some cases property owners, to provide security or additional police presence," said Chief Richard Biehl.
The contract will pay for 160 hours of extra patrols per month. The Chief says the deal will continue for as long as Summit Square deems necessary.
