DAYTON -- 12 dogs were rescued from a filthy house on West Fairview, according to officials from the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.
According to officers, the dogs did not have any food or clean water, and were chained to fences or swing sets.
Officers said one of the dogs and her four puppies, not even 2 weeks old, were covered in urine and feces.
"The dogs were kept in unfit conditions. The puppies were living in their own filth." Mark Kumpf, Director Montgomery County Animal Resource Center said.
According to the report, the dogs were left behind by the homeowner, who moved out and stopped taking care of them.
Those actions make neighbor Kearny Anderson angry.
"That is not the humane thing to do." He said. "I have very little regard for people who do something like that. " He said.
One of the dogs managed to hang himself from a backyard swing set. Responding Dayton Police officers were able to cut him loose and he is fine.
Investigators with the Animal Resource Center said this is the second case, this week where dogs were found abandoned and in bad shape.
"We are finding more an more dogs in vacant houses. It seems it to becoming a trend." Kumpf said.
Earlier this week, 5 dogs that police believed were used for dog fighting, were found on Helena Street and Brightwood Avenue.
Officials are investigating whether the dogs that were rescued on West Fairview , were also used for dog fighting.
Anderson is just glad the dogs now have food, water and clean kennels.
"At least they are being cared for properly. I feel pretty good about that."
