Tuesday Morning Hearing Set for Heat Nighclub

HUBER HEIGHTS -- A troubled bar in Huber Heights could soon be shut down for good, if the city and some community members get their way.

A county judge will decide whether Heat Nightclub will be closed for good at a hearing Tuesday morning.

"We want to take our community back," said Janell Smith, one of dozens in Huber Heights fighting to shut down the club. "It's putting the rest of the city at risk. We're very vulnerable when all the police have to go down south into one business establishment."

"It's not until just recently that it started to, certain areas started to get a little more shady than others and and Heat nightclub has had a really big impact on that," said David Smith, a concerned neighbor.

In fact, Huber Heights Police were called to the nightclub more than 600 times in the two years it's been open.

The calls include fights, disorderly conduct and shootings.

The latest was a double homicide just weeks after the club got its liquor license back from the state.

"Now there's two families that don't have their loved ones with them this holiday weekend and that's tragic for anybody," said Janell.

After the double fatal shooting, the city was granted a temporary injunction until May 28, when a hearing would be held in front of a county judge.

"I hope that she's closed for good, and actually I hope that she can't open any other establishments anywhere else," said Janell.

While it's up to the judge, Janell said she hopes that she and her community have done enough convincing, before she fears another life is taken.

"I would hope that there's enough voices to be heard that it would be closed because, I mean, somebody has to die in order for something to happen any more today, and that's really sad, very sad," said Janell.

Earlier this month, we spoke to the bar's owner, Jessica Kennedy. She tells us she has not violated any laws.

The hearing is set for Tuesday morning. We will continue to cover this story, and bring you the latest on the judge's ruling.
