UNDATED -- One place you'd expect to welcome water could make you sick.
Diarrhea is the most common water-illness, often caused by germs. Skin, ear and wound infections can also be contracted through water.
In order to avoid these illnesses, doctors say avoid swallowing water while swimming and shower before and after going into a pool.
Doctors also suggest paying attention to bacteria levels in lakes and streams, especially on hot days.
"The other time it's dangerous to go into a lake is immediately after a big storm," Dr. Susan Rehm of the Cleveland Clinic said. "There is more chance for runoff at that time and typically the bacteria levels in a lake go up after a big storm."
People are also advised to keep pets away from the pool, as they can contaminate water and spread disease-causing germs.
