DAYTON -- Stolen cell phone crackdown! Dayton police say cell phone theft is on the rise, primarily because they're so expensive. Plus they can easily be tampered with, and then re-sold on the black market.

However, Sen. Sherrod Brown says he has a plan to prevent sticky fingers from touching your phone. He's proposing new legislation that would create stiff penalties for anyone who try to re-sell stolen cells.

"I think that we're already an over-regulated society so I think it's definitely a waste," said Jamie Bridewell of Dayton.

"I think it's a necessary thing. Theft in all forms is bad and anything we can to do try to prevent that is a good thing," Richard Hathcock of Dayton added.

Dayton police say almost a quarter of all robberies this year has involved cell phones.

TROTWOOD -- As smartphones are becoming increasingly popular, they are also becoming a target for thieves because their SIM cards are easy to switch.

Senator Sherrod Brown says he has a plan to cut down on the crime.

Brown will be in Trotwood next Tuesday sharing the details.  He says the FCC is taking some steps to deactivate stolen phones but that he has co-sponsored legislation that goes further and calls for stiff penalties for anyone who tampers with a stolen phone.

Stay tuned for more details to come.
