CLARK COUNTY -- This Memorial Day America's fallen soldiers will be honored.
Today, in Clark County, other defenders of this country were saluted.
The Sheriff's office honored law enforcement and firefighters who died in the line of duty.
Among them is a deputy, brutally beaten in the 1800's while trying to protect a slave.
Sheriff Gene Kelly says, "He was doing his judicial duties in the service of this country to save a runaway slave just prior to the Civil War."
Sheriff Kelly says working in law enforcement is a constant risk, but the sacrifice is worth it.
