Pre-Kindergarten Funding

COLUMBUS -- Right now, local lawmakers are pushing for kids to spend more time in pre-kindergarten classrooms.

Senator Peggy Lehner chairs the Senate Education Committee.  She says lawmakers are working on a measure to allow Ohio's poorest kids to use vouchers to go to preschool.

"It's too late when they come to kindergarten to start asking them to know those basic things like their colors, their numbers, their alphabet," says Lehner.

The hope is to use $100 million dollars for vouchers that would allow nearly 21,000 kids to attend classes.

It is unclear if the voucher money is meant for public or private schools.

The plan was outlined as ministry leaders advocated for more funding, citing a study showing kids who go to pre-K have fewer babies out of wedlock.
