WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP -- Need a few extra dollars in your pocket? Well now may be the best time to refinance.
"It's just a lot of effort you want to make sure you get a good rate," said
Toniya Singh who hasn't refinanced her home in a few years. "The first time we refinance we had about a 2 percent savings. Now we may not have that much because we're already lower, but we are still going to look into it if it's going to be more than 1 percent it's worth it."
"You may be sitting at 5 percent and thinking that's great because you remember the days of 7 percent and 9 percent but at 5 percent if you go down to 3.5 percent you can save anywhere from $80 to $120 a month," said Jan Leverett of Irongate Realtors.
If you're thinking about refinancing your home Realtors say not to wait because the window of opportunity may be closing.
"The government is not going to be supporting a lot of the programs they've been having," said Leverett. "A lot of the programs are expiring if they didn't already expire in December. A couple of them were extended to this year but they will soon be going away. I don't know why they're waiting to refinance. It's time to make that leap of faith because it really is a good time."
Francine Riley didn't wait. Her bank just accepted her lower refinanced rate.
"We are happy we refinanced. It means we have a little bit more money to play with and we have money now to do some things to the house. After 19 years we need to do."
And now Toniya Singh says she's not going to wait any longer.
"Make sure I talk about it tonight at dinner," said Singh. "It's work. It's a lot of paperwork. It's a lot of phone calls and a lot of effort but if it's a saving of that magnitude, I think the sooner the better."
Realtors advise that you spend the money you save from refinancing on paying off the house sooner.
