CLINTONVILLE -- A Columbus police officer has been shot in the leg after a shootout and pursuit of a possible homicide suspect.
This all started just after 5 a.m. Wednesday in North Columbus near North High Street and North Broadway on Hennepin Ave.
One suspect was dead on the scene when medics arrived. The officer, who was shot in the leg, was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital reportedly is in stable condition.
FOP President Jason Pappas says another officer drove himself to the hospital and is also in stable condition. That police cruiser has multiple bullet holes in the glass and body of the vehicle.
The FOP President says the officers were targets of gunfire and are lucky to be alive.
Many streets are closed in the area for this large crime scene and police investigation.
This happened in the parking lot of Fire Station 19, which is locked down. The firefighters didn't witness anything, but were awakened by the gunfire. They cannot leave. The first shift firefighters are being reassigned to other fire stations.
From Columbus City Schools Clinton Elementary School, which is at High Street just south of North Broadway, is open, but buses are delayed because of the heavy traffic on West North Broadway. People who are coming to the school need to use back streets.
The Caribou Coffee window has a bullet hole from this shootout with police.
