DAYTON -- Police are investigating shots fired overnight at three locations in one Dayton neighborhood.

Dayton Police Sgt. Matthew Dickey said an apartment building and cars in the 1600 block of Superior Avenue, near Catalpa Drive were hit several times about 3 a.m. Wednesday. He said 17 shell casings were collected overnight. All of these were from a rifle.

The bullets hit walls or went through windows and into the ceiling, Dickey said.

Three apartments were reportedly occupied at the time of the shooting, although no one was injured.

One woman, who chose not to be identified, says her son was asleep in the basement and she was in bed upstairs when they both heard the shots. He ran upstairs to check on her, but didn't know about the damage to her home until the morning. It sustained three gunshots, in a window, the porch and front wall.

Police found additional shell casings this morning.

Police said similar shootings, involving rifle and handgun, also was reported in the 600 block of Oxford Avenue and the 900 block of Cumberland Avenue, both nearby.

Dickey said police have no idea about a motive behind the shootings.
