BEAVERCREEK -- A scam alert!

Beavercreek Police say they have received a report of a woman using a tragedy to scam homeowners.

We talked to the victim, who asked to be anonymous.

The police report says a woman came up to a door in the Knollwood neighborhood in Beavercreek and explained a heart-wrenching tragedy.

The woman explained a horrific accident, "she told me her husband and three-month-old had been in a wreck on US 35."

She told our victim she was new to the area and needed to get to the hospital.

"She told me she needed gas to get there, but she didn't know how far it was," said our anonymous woman.

Our victim offered to give her a ride to help, but the frantic woman insisted she'd find the hospital.

"So, I wrote down directions and gave her $20 bucks," she said.

An hour later, our victim, so worried, "I drove down to Miami Valley Hospital. They said they didn't have any patients in an accident," she said.

Police say don't answer the door if you don't know the person knocking. And, call police to have them try and get a person help.

And, for our anonymous woman, she turned out to be the real victim, "I would much rather it be a scam than wish an accident on my worst enemy."

Police say if there were ever a serious tragedy and a family member needed a ride, they would help assist them with finding a plan.
