KETTERING -- The family of a Kettering girl who's been missing since 1999, is giving back to the community.
Erica Baker was 9 years old, when she took her dog for a walk to Indian Riffle park and never returned. Baker's disappearance sparked a nationwide manhunt.
Monday evening, Erica's family awarded four Fairmont High School girls scholarships worth nearly $1,000. Each winner has a learning disability, just like Erica did.
Misty Baker, Erica's mother told us that was important to her, "It's an opportunity that I didn't get to do for Erica, but I get to do for them."
As for what happened to Erica after she went missing, investigators believe Christian Gabriel accidentally hit Erica with his van, but then covered up the incident by burying Erica's body.
In 2004, Gabriel was convicted of gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. Gabriel served six years and is now out of prison.
