Reward Offered for Ohio's Oldest Refrigerator

DAYTON -- Utilities throughout the state, including Dayton Power & Light, First Energy and Duke Energy, kick off Ohio’s Oldest Refrigerator Contest. The winner gets a $1,250 prize for the state’s most ancient refrigerator or freezer.

To enter the contest, participating utility customers sign up to have their refrigerator or freezer picked up for free and recycled by calling 877-545-4112, or clicking here, from May through July. Refrigerators and freezers must be in working order and meet a minimum size requirement (standard kitchen size units usually qualify – see website for details).

The Dayton Power & Light customer with the oldest refrigerator recycled during the contest will win $250, and will compete for the title of Ohio’s Oldest Refrigerator and another $1,000 award. The winner will be announced in August.

Even if your old refrigerator doesn’t win, all customers who unplug and recycle an old, working refrigerator or freezer will earn a $35 incentive and can save up to $150 a year in energy costs. Dayton Power & Light’s recycling program and the $35 incentive is available year-round.

Typically, the appliances recycled through the program are older units that have been used for extra food and drink storage in garages and basements. But the convenience of chilling an extra six-pack and some leftovers can come at a steep price. Refrigerators manufactured before 1990 can use three times more electricity than newer ones.

Dayton Power & Light picks up appliances and transports them to recycling facilities in Ohio operated by JACO Environmental. JACO safely removes hazardous materials from the old energy-guzzlers, reclaiming 95 percent of the materials in the appliances for reuse in manufacturing new products. Even the foam insulation, frequently containing ozone-depleting CFC gas, is safely incinerated and converted to electricity.
