BELLBROOK -- Three different fire departments take on a big apartment blaze early Thursday morning.
The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. at the Mill Pond apartment complex on Mill Pond Drive. Firefighters arrived to flames shooting out of the roof of the complex.
Witnesses say the fire started on one of the unit's balconies. The flames spread through two apartments. Firefighters say the units shared a common attic and that's what helped the fire spread.
Firefighters and police went door to door to make sure everyone got out safely. Sarah Dahlinghaus has lived at the complex for less than a month. She was asleep when the fire started.
"I woke up to a pounding on somebody else's door and I had no idea what it was," Dahlinghaus said. "And I got up and I grabbed a baseball bat that I had under my bed, thinking it was just someone running around starting trouble."
One woman was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The extent of the damage to the structure is unknown at this time. State Fire Marshal investigators will be on scene to determine how the fire started.
