DAYTON -- The Montgomery County Prosecutorâs Office is encouraging donations this week to help support victims of crime.
Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. said that in recognition of National Crime Victimsâ Rights Week, April 21â27, his office is holding a donation drive to collect donated cell phones.
âWe have made remarkable progress for crime victims, despite many challenges," Heck said. "Just 30 years ago, crime victims had no access to crime victim compensation, or other services to help rebuild their lives. They were often excluded from courtrooms, treated as an afterthought by the criminal justice system, and denied an opportunity to speak at sentencing. National Crime Victimsâ Rights Week reminds us that many challenges still remain, and that victims have rights, too.â
The Victim/Witness Division of the Prosecutorâs Office will have an informational booth from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily during the week, staffed by Victim/Witness Advocates, in the lobby of the Common Pleas Court Building. They are asking area residents to donate old cell phones to the booth or to the office.
Cell phones collected will be resold or recycled. The Prosecutorâs Victim/Witness Division will then be compensated for each phone donated.
The clothing worn by victims who respond to emergency rooms for a sexual assault examination is often collected as evidence by law enforcement. Many of these victims then do not have clothing to wear home. Money collected from the cell phone drive will be used to purchase clothing which will be distributed to area emergency rooms for these victims to wear home.
Cell phone donations can be dropped off at the booth, or at the Victim/Witness Division on the second floor of the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Building at 42 North Perry Street, or the main office lobby of the Prosecutorâs Office on the fifth floor of the DaytonâMontgomery County Courts Building at 301 West Third Street.
