DAYTON -- Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr. announced Thursday that Juwaun B. Bateman, 19, of Dayton, was found guilty of aggravated robbery and involuntary manslaughter related to the stabbing death of Phillip Ochen on December 2, 2012 in Miami Township.
The defendant, the deceased and another coâdefendant went to an apartment complex parking lot on Knoll Ridge Drive in Miami Township in the late evening hours of December 2, 2013, with the intention of committing an aggravated robbery. The deceased got into a physical altercation with the intended robbery victim. Both the intended robbery victim and the deceased were armed with knives. During the struggle, the deceased was fatally stabbed by the intended robbery victim.
Today, defendant Bateman entered guilty pleas to counts of Involuntary Manslaughter and Aggravated Robbery. Under Ohio law, this defendant is culpable for any death that occurs during the commission of an aggravated robbery, including the death of his robbery accomplice, Phillip Ochen.
Prosecutor Heck continued, âThis defendant, along with two others, were determined to commit a robbery. Their intended victim was able to defend himself, and fatally stabbed one of his attackers. This defendant, a coâconspirator, will be held accountable for the death.â
The defendant will be sentenced on May 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The defendant is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
