DAYTON -- 100 years ago today, the Great Flood of 1913 swept through Dayton. It was a combination of record rainfall and a poor levee system that allowed four trillion gallons of water to flood the streets of Dayton and surrounding communities.
The flood killed nearly 400 people and thousands of animals. Two months after the storm, Dayton received more than $2 million in donations, which allowed engineers to build a new levee system. The new system, that's in place even today, will prevent another catastrophe from happening again.
