GREENE COUNTY -- The Greene County Sheriff's Office has identified the two people who died in a reported murder-suicide.

Sheriff's Maj. Eric Spicer said Elizabeth Carter, 47, was murdered by her former husband, James Carter, 51, who then committed suicide. Both lived at the Larkins Road address where they died.

Spicer said sheriff's deputies and officers from Cedarville and Yellow Springs arrived to 3481 Larkins Road and provided protection to those found at the scene of the rural property, which is about 8 miles northwest of Xenia.

Spicer said deputies "made emergency entrance into the residence in an attempt to rescue Elizabeth Carter who was reported shot, and injured inside the home along with a reportedly injured James Carter."

Spicer said Elizabeth was deceased at that time. James Carter was severely injured but died when medical attention was being provided by Miami Township Fire Rescue.

Greene County Sheriff's Deputies are conducting a homicide investigation and Spicer said several witnesses have been interviewed and autoposies have been performed. He said the investigation could take several weeks.

Spicer said the Greene County Sheriff's Office extends its sincere condolences to the survivors of this tragic event.

Greene Co. Deputies Investigate Apparent Murder-Suicide

GREENE COUNTY -- Authorities are trying to piece together what may have triggered a murder-suicide in Greene County.

It happened late Saturday night on Larkins Road just outside Cedarville.

Word is beginning to trickle into town about a murder-suicide just down the road from her. The Sheriff's Office says it happened during a family gathering.

They say a man took a gun, shot a woman and then himself.

It's quite a shock for those who live in the small town.

"I guess it's surprising just because it's such a family town," said Sarah Thompson.

Those who live in Cedarville say this isn't the kind of headline they see. There's around 4,000 people in the town. Many of them college students at Cedarville University.

It's known for its strong values and faith in the community.

Authorities are interviewing everyone who was in the house to try to figure out what may have led to the shooting.

They have yet to say how these two people knew each other. The coroner is expected to release the identities tomorrow morning.
