BUTLER COUNTY -- A dog found starved and freezing had to be put down to end his suffering. The Animal Friends Humane Society sent out the following release regarding the incident:
Elizabeth Lewis of Hamilton was charged with failure to license her dog and cruelty to a companion animal on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Hamilton Police Department first responded to a call on Monday, February 25 involving an emaciated dog that had appeared to have fallen down some steps in an apartment building. When they arrived they immediately contacted the Butler County Dog Wardens office and Deputy Henson responded. The call came in around 9:30 PM. Deputy Henson immediately realized the severity of the situation and ordered Ms. Lewis to take the dog, formerly called Bruiser, to an emergency vet clinic to have the dog euthanized and end its suffering.
Deputy Henson followed up with the vet clinic the following day and found that the body temperature of the dog was so low it couldn't register on a thermometer, and the condition the animal was in was a direct result of starvation. Deputy Henson and Deputy Merbs returned to Ms. Lewis' residence and issued her the summons for cruelty.
This is not the first time Ms. Lewis has been charged with animal cruelty. This same dog was brought to Animal Friends Humane Society in August of 2012 by Deputy Flanagan, Butler County Dog Warden. At that time Bruiser was extremely lethargic and malnourished, weighing in at 17 pounds. Deputy Flanagan appeared in court on October 5, 2012 to present the case to Judge Gattermeyer of Hamilton Municipal Court. Judge Gattermeyer found Ms. Lewis not guilty and released the dog back to her care. When Bruiser left Animal Friends Humane Society on October 5 he weighed 38 pounds.
Ms. Lewis is scheduled to appear in Hamilton Municipal Court on March 6, 2013 at 8:00 AM.
